| | TIBETAN BRIDGE GORGE OF THE SAN GERVASIO The Tibetan bridge extends between the municipalities of Cesana Torinese and Claviere. Today the two localities are connected on land by the modern mountain road No. 24 which bears no resemblance to the precarious, rugid roadways of the past. In the nineteenth century Napolean's technicians outlined a route to connect Briançon and Cesana Torinese which somewhat coincides with the current one. This precursor meandered the whole valley floor instead of crossing the stream to go towards Chaberton and paralleling the Comba Bridge, it went straight and climbed steeply towards the San Gervasio Cappella (visible from its rocky summit that introduces the city of Claviere past the actual tunnel). It is an incomparable wilderness beauty that frames the gorge preceding the plane of Clavier and captures the attention of tourists and visitors. From Cesana Torinese the Piccola Dora valley narrows progressively between the slopes of Sagnalong and Chamberton forming a wild and spectacular natural incut. The geomorphology of the landscape was fashioned over hundreds of thousands of years by the erosion of the land, the onset and retreat of glaciers and the currents of the Piccola Dora river that begins near the col of Monginevro. The slopes consists most prevalently of limestone dolomite and the sediments in the moraine are a spectacular testimony of the extinct paleo and geographic environment of which a great part is still recognizable-- an extraordinary value to students of geology and naturalists. The existing flora and fauna are also of notable interest. In the waters of the Piccola Dora and the littoral regions flourishes an extremely interesting environment for nature lovers. The riverbanks are covered with weeping willows, poplars, elders and wild cherry trees while the steeper enbankments are flanked with numerous examples of ucinatus pines, cembrus pines and larch conifers. The recovery of this environment has been made possible by the suspended steel cable (Tibetan) bridge, which allows the two zones belonging to the communities of Cesana Torinese and Claviere to be connected. The usability of the area permits people of all activity levels (even the non-athletic) to enjoy a natural environment of great value. In consideration of the extreme difficulty in realizing a work of this magnitude, the construction of the Tibetan bridge was entrusted to a company specializing in rope work, The Piemonte Disgaggi S.A.S., which carefully tended to the exploration and research of the location, the preservation of the natural environment of the gorge and the positioning and interlacing of the numerous cables in the two directions. The walkway consists of a succession of metal plates while the security of the excursionist is secured by two lateral cables that function as handrails and an overhead cable that runs through a safety carabiner.
